How ChatGPT, Perplexity & Gemini Decide Which Brands to Cite

Three AI engines now account for the majority of AI-driven product research globally: ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. Each one has a fundamentally different model for deciding which sources and brands it trusts. Getting cited by all three requires understanding these differences — and building your presence accordingly.

1. The Three Models of AI Citation

The biggest mistake brands make in AEO is treating all AI engines the same. They are not. Each one has a distinct philosophy for how it finds, evaluates, and presents sources.

ChatGPT: The Narrative Authority Model

ChatGPT (with Browse/Search enabled) weights topic authority over recency. It looks for “pillar” content — comprehensive, long-form guides that synthesize multiple sub-questions into one authoritative answer. If your site has a 3,000-word guide on a category topic that covers definitions, comparisons, use cases, and FAQs, ChatGPT is likely to treat that page as a canonical source. Official documentation, authored blog posts, and established industry publications are its preferred citation sources.

Perplexity: The Evidence-First Model

Perplexity is a real-time web search engine with an AI synthesis layer. It prioritizes structured evidence blocks — content that contains scannable, verifiable data points rather than narrative prose. Pages with comparison tables, numbered lists of specific facts, clear “Key Findings” sections, and data citations are cited by Perplexity at significantly higher rates than narrative-only content. It also heavily weights third-party review sources (Reddit, G2, Trustpilot, product review blogs) over brand-owned pages.

Gemini: The Entity Coherence Model

Gemini (Google’s AI) is deeply integrated with Google’s Knowledge Graph. It weights entity coherence — how consistently your brand, products, and claims appear across Google’s index, your structured data, Google Business Profile, and third-party sources. A brand whose name, description, and category are identical across its website, Wikidata entry, and high-DA news coverage is far more likely to be cited by Gemini than one with inconsistent entity signals. Schema markup (especially Organization and Product JSON-LD) has a disproportionate impact on Gemini citations.

3. The Query Fan-Out Problem

One of the most underappreciated mechanics in AI search is what we call query fan-out. When a user asks Gemini or Perplexity a complex question, the engine does not run a single search. It decomposes the query into 3–7 sub-questions and searches each one simultaneously.

For example, a query like “what is the best AI visibility monitoring tool for cross-border brands?” might fan out into:

  • → “best AI brand monitoring tools 2026”
  • → “tools that monitor localized search ecosystems”
  • → “chatgpt brand visibility tracking”
  • → “AEO tools for agencies”
  • → “localized brand visibility monitoring”

A brand that only ranks well for one of these sub-queries will appear in fewer final citations than a brand that has content covering multiple nodes of the fan-out. This is why topical authority — not individual page rankings — is the real AEO metric to build toward.

4. Why Your Competitors Get Cited and You Don’t

In our audits across hundreds of brand pages, the same patterns appear repeatedly when a competitor is cited and the audited brand is not:

Their FAQ page has schema. Yours doesn’t.

FAQPage JSON-LD is the single highest-ROI AEO fix. AI engines treat structured FAQ content as pre-validated answer blocks. Without it, your answers compete as raw prose against a competitor’s structured responses.

They have third-party mentions. You rely on your own site.

Perplexity weights external validation heavily. If your competitor has been reviewed on 15 credible third-party sites and you have been reviewed on 3, Perplexity will cite them proportionally more — regardless of how good your own content is.

If your brand name, tagline, or category description varies between your website, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, and Wikidata — Gemini’s Knowledge Graph treats you as a lower-confidence entity. Your competitor with perfectly consistent signals across all sources gets the citation benefit.

Your competitor has a pricing page, a comparison page, an FAQ, a use case page, and three blog posts — each answering a different sub-query. You have one product page. The engine cites the brand that has evidence across more of the fan-out tree.

6. What About Localized Search Ecosystems?

The citation mechanisms described above apply to global mainstream answer engines. Kimi, Doubao, and DeepSeek — three dominant localized search models with massive monthly active users — operate on fundamentally different source ecosystems.

Kimi weights Zhihu and structured brand pages. Doubao weights Douyin and Xiaohongshu social content. DeepSeek weights technical documentation and GitHub presence. For brands selling in China or Southeast Asia, optimizing only for ChatGPT and Perplexity means ignoring the AI engines that actually influence purchase decisions in those markets.
